Lobby on for safe passage at Harmer, Caroline
As this map of our main street shows it’s a long stretch between the intersection at Holland –on the far right– and the next legal place to walk across Wellington heading west, visible as a thin white line at Smirle Street, to the far left of the map. ( For reference the Bridgehead cafe is the red “A” point)
With the steady draw of businesses like Thyme and Again, Bridgehead, and Booster Juice along this length of the main street, it’s no surprise that many pedestrians simply wait for a pause in traffic and jaywalk across rather than going as far as the Smirle crosswalk.
Though many strollers are guilty of this practice from time to time, one local man has come out and admitted to constantly violating the jaywalking bylaw. But Harmer Street homeowner Peter Bleyer isn’t just flouting authority for the fun of it.
Instead, as you’ll hear in the audio below, he’s hoping to draw attention to a problem that he and his neighbours are trying to fix by using the opportunity of the road reconstruction to press for a safer crossing close to the busy northern end of Harmer Street, where Wellington also meets Caroline.
